The UCLA Library Cataloging Center seeks applicants for the position of Arabic Cataloger. The successful candidate will provide original cataloging for Arabic-language materials covering all subject areas. Non-Arabic materials in the incumbent's responsibilities include but are not limited to the areas of the Middle East as well as Islamic culture, history and Arabic literature. Catalog materials in all formats including serials and electronic resources. Other cataloging assignment may be made, based on language expertise, from among the following: other Arabic-script materials, Persian, Turkish, and Central Asian languages. In addition, incumbent will be responsible for assigned subject areas in Western European languages. Using the MARC21 formats, AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, and Library of Congress classification schedules, create and edit bibliographic records in OCLC and the local integrated online system. Respond to requests for metadata advice, in support of UCLA digital library projects.

Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience). Fluent reading knowledge of Arabic. Cultural understanding of the Middle East. Knowledge of national standards; in particular, use of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification, MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data, and the ALA-LC Romanization Table for Arabic. Experience with the principles of authority control. Knowledge of trends in automation as they relate to cataloging. Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc., in cataloging or in a subject expertise. Strong service orientation; excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with staff, students, and faculty of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Salary Range: $37,920 - $64,164
